Hands-On Career Discovery During Spring Break

Our middle school students spent their spring break exploring future possibilities during an exciting, hands-on visit to Lorenzo Walker Technical College. At this stage in their academic journey, exposure to real-world careers is especially important—helping students begin to connect their interests, strengths, and classroom learning to future opportunities.

Throughout the day, students rotated through interactive programs that introduced them to a variety of career pathways. In the automotive lab, they collaborated to build and design race cars, learning the basics of engineering, mechanics, and teamwork. In the veterinary program, students cared for puppies while also learning how to read and analyze urine samples, offering a hands-on look at animal health and responsibility.

The pharmacy technician lab brought a fun and practical twist, as students practiced counting “medication” using M&Ms—reinforcing the importance of precision and attention to detail. Meanwhile, in the nursing program, students learned how to take blood pressure and explored basic anatomy, gaining insight into patient care and the human body.

Experiences like this are critical during the middle school years, when students are beginning to form their sense of identity and imagine what their future might look like. By engaging directly with different career fields, students not only gain knowledge, but also confidence—seeing themselves in roles they may not have previously considered. These early moments of exploration can spark curiosity, open doors, and help students begin to envision a path forward.
