Stepping Up to the Plate: A Life-Changing Experience at Cal Ripken Camp

Eight Grace Place students recently had the incredible opportunity to travel to Maryland and participate in the Cal Ripken Summer Camp, an experience that goes far beyond baseball. The week-long program provides opportunities to build confidence, learn new skills, make friends, and experience adventures many students might not otherwise have access to.
After arriving in Baltimore and settling into North Bay, the campground where they stay for the week, students receive their Cal Ripken gear and quickly jump into camp life. From zip lining and rock climbing to swimming and conquering the giant swing, students are encouraged to step outside their comfort zones and try something new. They also have the opportunity to meet campers from different organizations and backgrounds, forming friendships that often last well beyond the week.
Each day begins early as students head to the Cal Ripken facility for a unique combination of baseball training and educational experiences. In addition to practicing baseball skills and participating in team activities, students interact with law enforcement professionals, including K-9 officers, state troopers, police officers, and members of the bomb squad. They gain firsthand insight into career paths in public service and learn about the equipment and training these professionals use every day.
One of the highlights of the week is a visit to Great Wolf Lodge, where students can relax, enjoy the water park, and spend time with both old and new friends. These moments create lasting memories and strengthen the connections made throughout the camp experience.
On the final day, students put their skills into action during official games against teams from other organizations. Afterward, they celebrate with snow cones, ice cream, a closing ceremony, and a fun-filled game of bingo before preparing for the trip home.
For staff, one of the most rewarding parts of the experience is witnessing the students’ growth throughout the week. Many arrive hesitant to try new things, but by the end of camp they are more confident, willing to take on challenges, and eager to support their teammates. Watching students build friendships, embrace new experiences, and believe in themselves is truly inspiring.
The Cal Ripken Camp experience is about much more than baseball. It gives students the opportunity to develop confidence, build meaningful relationships, and discover new possibilities for their future. We are grateful to be part of a program that helps students grow, dream bigger, and create memories that will last a lifetime.
