Cookies & Conversation Builds Confidence, One Conversation at a Time

For many parents in Grace Place’s Bright Beginnings program, speaking English outside the classroom can feel intimidating. While vocabulary and grammar are important building blocks, confidence comes from real-life practice. That’s why Grace Place hosts Cookies & Conversation, a special event that brings together English language learners with volunteers, donors, and community members for an evening of meaningful conversation.

This year, Bright Beginnings parents participated in the event, practicing their English skills in a welcoming and supportive environment while enjoying cookies and conversation.

Cookies & Conversation gives students the opportunity to use the English they’ve learned in class through everyday discussions. In the weeks leading up to the event, parents prepare by practicing common conversation topics such as family traditions, favorite foods, hobbies, work experiences, and future goals.

The format is simple but impactful. Participants rotate to a new conversation partner every few minutes, allowing them to meet a variety of English speakers and practice answering questions multiple times. With each new conversation, they become more comfortable and confident communicating in English.

For many parents, what begins as nervousness quickly gives way to smiles, laughter, and a growing belief in their abilities. Through these conversations, participants strengthen their language skills while building connections with people who are cheering them on.

According to Diane Ponton, Director of Family Literacy, opportunities for authentic conversation are essential to language development.

“Many of our students know more English than they realize. They simply need opportunities to practice and trust their abilities. Cookies & Conversation creates a welcoming space where students can take risks, make mistakes, and discover that they can successfully communicate. By the end of the evening, you can see their confidence growing with every conversation.”

The impact reaches far beyond language acquisition. As parents develop stronger English skills, they are better equipped to communicate with teachers, navigate healthcare appointments, pursue employment opportunities, and advocate for their families. They also become more engaged in their children’s education, helping create a strong foundation for future success.

At Grace Place, learning English is about more than mastering a language. It’s about building confidence, fostering connections, and creating opportunities for families to thrive. Through experiences like Cookies & Conversation, parents are discovering their voices and taking important steps toward achieving their goals.
