Exploring Athletics and Conservation
Eight of Grace Place’s middle school students recently embarked on an exciting educational journey to the 2024 Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation – NCEF Summer Experience. Hosted at IMG Academy in Bradenton, the three-day camp immersed them in a variety of enriching activities that combined sports education with environmental awareness.
Upon arrival, the group was warmly welcomed by the NCEF staff who outfitted them with shirts, backpacks, shorts, and hats, setting the stage for an unforgettable experience.
During their visit, the students explored the training facilities, learning about the importance of proper nutrition for daily life and athletic performance. They also engaged in mind-stimulating puzzles and competitions at the “mind gym,” enhancing their cognitive skills and teamwork.
A highlight of their experience was attending a Tampa Rays baseball game, where they not only cheered for their favorite team but also interacted with rays in the touch tank.
Their learning journey continued with a visit to the Tampa Bay Discovery Watch Center, where the children discovered the diverse marine life inhabiting the bay and learned about ongoing conservation efforts. A thrilling boat ride followed, during which they saw a pod of dolphins, including adorable babies. The boat’s crew did a trawl, showing the students various marine creatures, including puffer fish!
The final day brought STEM adventures with Sidewalk Science Lab, where the children explored buoyancy, electricity using a Tesla coil, and the science behind the curveball in baseball. These hands-on activities deepened their understanding of physics in a sports context, rounding out their educational experience.
The 2024 Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation – NCEF Summer Experience left an indelible mark on the children of Grace Place, blending sports education with environmental awareness in a fun and engaging way. We are deeply grateful to our community partners who provide our students with such fantastic opportunities!
